You're doing the right thing sampling different ones. It's possible you won't find a fragrance "soulmate," and that's okay too. There are a lot of great ones out there, many that I respect and appreciate. But, for me, Chanel Égoïste is just perfectly satisfying.
If you're referring to Egoiste EDT (not the Platinum version), its first 20-30 mins. is mostly sharp citrus and rosewood. Then, it develops into a smooth floral, spicy, woodsy, and semi-sweet vanilla scent. Like all classics, some basenotes/fragrantica forum members claim Platinum Egoiste has been reformulated and is a sad version of its former self. I can't comment on original version because I never smelled it, but my bottle from 2017 smells divine.
