Tips for Mental Wellness

While most people know what to do to manage their physical health, it can be a bit difficult knowing what to do to manage your mental health.  There are a lot of different things you can do to improve or maintain your mental wellness; the following are some tips to help you get started.

  • Do something you’re good at to build up your self-confidence.
  • Think of something in your life you want to improve, and figure out a plan for how to make it happen.
  • Do something creative; write a poem, paint, try a DIY project, or try out a new recipe.
  • Don’t be afraid to go off the grid for a little while; turn off your phone so you’re not interrupted for a while.
  • If something has been bothering you, get all your feelings out by writing them down.
  • If you’re not allergic, spend some time with a pet. If you have your own set aside specific time to play with them.  If you don’t see if a friend or family member needs a pet sitter.
  • Try to find the silver lining in bad situations that happen.
  • If you’re feeling stressed out try to smile. Smiling can help lower your heart rate and calm you down.
  • Send a handwritten thank you note to someone to let them know why you appreciate them.
  • Do something with your family or a group of friends. Have a cookout, go to the beach, or just play board games.
  • Take 30 minutes to go through a walk in some sort of nature, like a walk in the park, or a hike in the woods. Check if there’s a botanical garden nearby.
  • Try something outside your comfort zone to get a feeling of adventure and excitement.
  • Write down 3 things you’re grateful for every day and/or 3 things you were able to accomplish.
  • Volunteer somewhere, such as a homeless shelter, animal shelter, or soup kitchen. Helping others can make you feel better about yourself.
  • Make sure you get plenty of sleep; you’re more likely to succeed at what you need to do if you’re well rested.
  • Find some way to laugh; watch a funny show or go see a comedian. Laughing can decrease pain and promote muscle relaxation.
  • Try some mindfulness exercises to quiet your mind and help you stay in the moment.
  • Avoid self-medicating with alcohol or drugs if you’re having problems.

Keep in mind that what works for one person might not work for another; try different things to see what works for you.  If you’re having a hard time managing your mental health yourself, look into getting help from a counselor or therapist.  Seeking help is not a weakness; you should do whatever it takes to make sure you’re mentally healthy.
