Everyone knows that physical activity is important. But when most people think about physical activity they tend to focus on one component: weight control. While weight control is extremely important, especially considering the rise of obesity, but there are several other huge benefits of maintaining one’s physical activity. In fact, regular physical activity has been shown to reduce your risk for several diseases and health conditions. Did you know that?

Considering that heart disease and strokes are two of the leading causes of death in the United States, doing anything to prevent cardiovascular disease is one of the most important things you can do. Before going any further, what exactly is physical activity? Physical activity can be defined as any physical movement, or any activity in which your body requires energy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults have at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of physical activity every week; that’s only 150 minutes. This seems like a daunting task, but remember the benefits and how many different types of physical activity you can do. Listed below are some examples of how you can fill that time up throughout a week:

  • Jogging or running
  • Walking (quickly, or for a long period)
  • Playing sports like soccer, tennis, basketball, etc.
  • Swimming
  • Riding a bike
  • Hiking

The benefits of physical activity are almost never-ending, and all add to a much better quality of life. And, this quality of life can be improved by doing thing like walking your dog, or even mowing the lawn!
