Joplin is the largest city in Jasper County Missouri. It is also considered the main hub of the three-county Joplin-Miami, Oklahoma metropolitan area. The city of Joplin was named by John C. Cox after a nearby spring and creek. In the 1870’s Joplin was known for its lead mining, which lead to railroads being built to connect it to major markets for the easy transportation of lead. A fun history fact had notorious criminals Bonnie and Clyde spending several weeks in Joplin, where they robbed several businesses. The house where the notorious couple stayed was nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2011, the city of Joplin experienced their worst natural catastrophe when a EF5 Tornado causing devastating damage to over 8,400 homes, 18,000 cars and Over 450 businesses. Over 160 lives were lost due to the tornado. Today after over $800 million in reconstructive efforts Joplin has regained its footing and has been able to rebuild from the ground up. After this immense natural disaster, the resiliency of city and its residents has never been in question.
