Did you know that we all have a brain? It may not seem like it at times, but we all have one brain. The key word there is one just like we have only one back and one heart. We all focus really hard to improve the health of our heart and lungs and improve our muscle quality, but we don’t think very many times to work on our mental health.

Our brain is quite a complex organ. With brain cells growing and diminishing each day, it works extremely hard. Oh, and not to mention, it controls the function of every fiber of our body, so with the brain having such an important role in our lives, why do we not spend more time ensuring it gets a proper work out? And speaking of that, how can you work out your brain?

Below is an excerpt taken from a presentation on Brain Health put together by Valerie Beck, Industrial Hygienist at the Aurora site. In early 2016, Mark Johnson, General Manager at Aurora, asked for some research to be done regarding brain health based on a book he read. Her slides are based on that book, “Change Your Brain Change your Life” by Daniel G. Amen, MD and various other resources. Please review the presentation.  I hope it changes your life by helping you change your brain.

Daniel G. Amen, M.D. says, “When your brain works right, you work right, and when your brain is troubled you are much more likely to have trouble in your life.” Dr. Amen offers the following tips to keep your brain functioning at optimal capacity. There are four factors for health and wellness:

  1. BIOLOGICAL
  2. PSYCHOLOGICAL
  3. SOCIAL
  4. SPIRITUAL

Experts like Dr. Amen say there are many specific choices we can make that will physically affect our brains and our mental health

  1. Nutrients from food
  2. Restoration from sleep
  3. The body’s reactions from exercise
  4. The biological consequences of our own thoughts
  5. All the items above can either build and nurture, or break down and sap, the very functions in our brain that add or subtract from our well-being.

 

What should you do? Eat a brain-healthy diet of lean proteins; make sure food is low in fat and sugar; eat from the rainbow- natural foods of different colors and drink plenty of water. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. It can help protect your mental and physical health; your overall quality of life and safety. Start exercising! An increase in physical activity improves cognitive function by pumping more blood and oxygen to the brain. Having an active lifestyle also boosts learning and memory at any age. Learn healthy ways to cope with stress and problems that are a normal part of life. Express feelings in appropriate ways. Develop resilience to cope with stress in a healthy way. Calm your mind and body by relaxing and meditating.
