Geographically Aurora is a total of 1.0 square mile.  The Aurora mine is located just outside the town.  Aurora is best known as the home of the Aurora Fossil Museum.  The museum houses specimens collected from the local PCS Phosphate Mine. The museum’s collection includes a wide variety of marine fossils from the Pleistocene, Pliocene and Miocene eras. The museum also houses other specimens and a gem and mineral display. There is a black room to see fossils and minerals glow under a black light. There is also a full room of Native American artifacts as well…the newest add on is the new Mine Room. The 2016 Us census estimated a population of 517 people. Larger nearby cities include New Bern and Greenville, North Carolina.
